In 1978, we were called to « refurbish » Perseignes social quarter. And to do it together with the inhabitants.Without proposing anything that was not uttered by the inhabitants, we let the landscape create itself. It grew in a popular way, ordinary, at the right scale, and finally it became inhabitable again. For example, to slow down traffic on a dangerous crossroad , we altered the visibility by means of forming rolling hills along the side of the road. The result was that automobiles started driving with caution. The pedestrians on the other hand rediscovered instinctively an ancient path leading through the neighbourhood that had been erased by modern urbanists. This path served as a virtual street during the planning of a new college that we implanted in the middle of all that asphalt. In the buildings, we were only able to « civilize » one staircase. We did so by making a few offices, using all kind of building materials, remodeling appartments, adding two new appartments on the roof of the building, and above all plant lots of trees.
